Official Lollapalooza Pre-Party - Devo w/ The Dirty Projectors @ Congress Theater (Thursday, 8/5/10)
An art-school band that became a new-wave icon almost by accident, Devo started out in the early ’70s with a mind to mock the “de-evolution” that technology set in motion. The group got by on geeky obsessions, robotic dance moves, and clanging, pent-up electronic pop. Devo found an early fan in Brian Eno, who produced the group’s 1978 debut, and subsequent hits like “Whip It” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (a goofy/great cover of The Rolling Stones song) haven’t left the cultural lexicon ever since. True to its roots, the new Something For Everybody, Devo’s first studio album in 20 years, is the result of a massive satirical marketing campaign: In a tongue-in-cheek effort to give the people what they want, the band used focus groups and public polls to determine the track listing, album artwork, and even the now-blue color of its signature energy domes.
